Asger Jorn (1914-1973) is considered by many to be one of Denmark's leading twentieth-century artists. His spontaneous, abstract art has achieved great international recognition. Asger Jorn was a versatile artist who, besides painting, also worked with ceramics, illustrations, printmaking and sculpture. His imagery continued to develop throughout his artistic career.
With his colourful and imaginative works, Asger Jorn both inspired and challenged his contemporaries. Play and spontaneity were characteristic of Jorn's working method. So, too, were experimentation and the need to find new ways. Together with Danish and European fellow artists, Jorn attempted to unite the currents in modern European art with the Danish tradition. He was a member and co-founder of numerous artists' groups, among others Høst, COBRA and, later on, Situationist International. He published periodicals and several books on topics such as aesthetics, philosophy, politics and history.
Jorn lived in Silkeborg as a young man and, throughout his life, maintained a strong affiliation to the town. In later years, he lived mostly abroad, settling among other places in Paris and in Albisola, a town in northern Italy. Jorn had the idea and, indeed, a wish to see Silkeborg as a centre for modern international art. During the years 1953-73, he donated his collections of his own works together with those of other artists to the town's art museum, today known as Museum Jorn. A collection of 5.500 works made by 150 artists from all over the world.
Museum Jorn contains the world's largest collections of Asger Jorn works, thanks to the generous gift he made. In addition to the permanent display of Jorn's works and collection, the museum also offers changing exhibitions. Each year, the museum attracts great numbers of visitors from home and abroad to see, among much else, his main work, Stalingrad. Learn more on www.museumjorn.dk
A mug from Museum Jorn is a way of retaining an artistic experience, and the illustrations on the mugs reflect Jorn's imagery over a period of about 20 years.
